Abstract: English is a global language in a multilingual country like India! It is a symbol of people’s aspirations for quality in education and a fuller participation in national and international life. English has become the! global language at a time when technological breakthroughs have shrunk the globe. It goes without saying that English assumes a very important place in the entire scheme of our school education because of its three fold purposes-as a national link language, as an international link language and as a | library language. India is determined to achieve the status of a developed nation by 2020. We are moving fast to that direction. Our economy has opened up and is attracting multinationals in a great number. Foreign investment has increased multifold. Industry, especially, information technology (IT) is witnessing a boom. Under the changed scenario the importance of English has increased tremendously. Almost all the states have started teaching English either from class I or from class III. They are making serious efforts to improve the quality of teaching English. New textbooks are being written and teachers of English are being trend.
